Chiller van or freezer truck: which do you need?
A plain guide to choosing between chiller van hire and freezer truck rental in the UAE: temperatures, products, mixed loads and the questions to ask before you book.

Most businesses that rent refrigerated vehicles in the UAE ask the same first question: do we need a chiller van or a freezer truck? The answer depends less on the vehicle and more on the product. Get it right and your goods arrive in the condition they left. Get it wrong and you either pay for capability you do not use, or you put stock at risk on every run.
Start with the product, not the vehicle
Every temperature-sensitive product has a range it needs to stay within. Your supplier, your food safety plan or your quality team will usually specify it. As a broad guide, chilled products need to stay cold but above freezing, while frozen products need to stay frozen solid throughout the journey.
- Chilled: fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, fresh meat and poultry, fresh fish, prepared meals, sandwiches and salads, desserts, flowers and many beverages.
- Frozen: frozen meat and seafood, ice cream, frozen bakery, frozen ready meals and other stock that must not thaw.
- Controlled or specialist: some medicines, vaccines and diagnostics have narrow ranges set by the manufacturer. These need agreeing in writing before anything moves.
If you only ever move one of these groups, the choice is simple. Chiller van hire covers chilled goods. Freezer truck rental covers frozen goods. The decision gets harder when your product mix changes from day to day.
What a chiller van does well
A chiller van is the workhorse of food distribution in Dubai. Restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers and fresh produce suppliers use them for short, frequent runs where product is loaded cold and delivered within hours. Because the refrigeration only has to hold goods above freezing, chiller vans are well suited to multi-drop routes where the doors open many times a day.
The limits are equally clear. A chiller van is not designed to keep frozen stock frozen. Putting ice cream or frozen meat in a chilled compartment, even for a short trip, risks partial thawing, which can make the product unsafe and unsellable.
What a freezer truck does well
A freezer truck holds goods below zero. It is the right choice for frozen food distributors, ice cream brands, seafood importers and any business moving stock that must stay frozen from cold store to customer. Because it can hold lower temperatures, it also has more capacity to recover after door openings, which matters in UAE summer heat.
The trade-off is cost. Frozen capability usually costs more to rent and run, and there is no benefit in paying for it if your products are all chilled.
Mixed loads: the honest answer
Many businesses move both chilled and frozen products, sometimes to the same customer. It is tempting to put everything in one vehicle at one temperature. In practice that means one of the two product groups travels at the wrong temperature. Better options are to separate chilled and frozen into different vehicles, schedule them on different runs, or ask your provider about a setup designed for both. Tell your provider exactly what you move and they should recommend the safest option, not just the cheapest.
Four questions to ask before you book
- What temperature range does each product need, and who set it?
- How many drops per run, and how long between loading and the last delivery?
- Will the vehicle be loaded with product that is already at temperature?
- Which documents will your customers, auditors or venues ask to see?
The answers will tell you whether you need chilled, frozen or both, and whether daily hire, monthly reefer rental or a dedicated reefer fleet makes more sense.
Loading habits matter as much as the vehicle
Refrigerated vehicles are designed to hold temperature, not to bring warm product down. Pre-cool the compartment before loading, load directly from cold storage, keep the doors closed between drops and leave space for air to circulate around the load. These habits protect product in any vehicle, chilled or frozen.
